This super-cute little fox demon entered the show in Episode 9:  Enter Shippo!  Plus . . . the Amazing Thunder Brothers.  On the show, his orriginal goal was to steal the Shikon No Tama in order to become a stronger demon so that he could defeat the Thunder Brothers who had murdered both his parents shortly before.  Shippo has a wide array of attacks, all of which are fox magic, or illusions.  On occasion he uses foxfire, a relatively powerful attack, when an expert uses it, which Shippo is not.  Since Shippo has no family, he joins up with the gang.  He's a cool little kid, and when his friends are in danger, he's more than willing to risk his own hide to save them.  Shippo is also good for comedy in the show, and frequently blurts out things that have innappropriate meanings.  Because he has no idea what they mean, it's always good for a laugh.
