Inuyasha is half-demon, and he's not particularly happy to talk about it. When he learned of
the sacred Shikon no Tama and it's amazing powers, he decided he would like to have the jewel and set out to steal it.
The protector of the jewel, a priestess named Kikyo, did not destroy Inuyasha, but simply chased him away, and over time,
they fell in love. The two decided that Inuyasha would use the jewel and become human, living out his life with Kikyo.
The evil demon Naraku tricked the two, and mortally wounded Kikyo while disguised as Inuyasha.
He also attacks, but fails to injure, Inuyasha in a Kikyo form. Inuyasha is then sealed to an ancient tree by Kikyo,
who dies immediately after. He remains there for fifty years until fifteen year old Kagome comes along and is being
attacked by Mistress Centipede.
She pulls out the arrow and releases him from the spell. Inuyasha orriginally thinks that Kagome
is Kikyo and insults her, and at first he tries to kill her. He tells Kagome he hates the way she smells, but when
he turns into Black-Haired Inuyasha, he tells her she smells good. Every new moon, Inuyasha turns human! No cute
little doggie ears that night! This is because he's only half-demon. This tends to be a major problem
however, because on those nights, he is, for all intensive purposes, human. He loses his superhuman strength and isn't
really very useful. It's made all the worse by the fact that Inuyasha guards his secret so carefully that half the crew
doesn't even know what's going on when he disappears. Of course they eventually find out, but still!
His mother was a beautiful human woman and his father was a sort of superdemon. They refer to
him as the Lord of the Western Lands. Anyway, he must now help Kagome gather up the pieces of the shattered jewel.
You want to know the basics of Inuyasha's personality? He's a stubborn, violent, angry seventeen year old guy witha
bad attitude who's only redeeming quality is his love first for Kikyo and later for Kagome. But he's so cool, who cares?
As the show goes on, he is repeatedly hurt and betrayed by Kikyo, but continues to love her.
At one point, they talk and decide that they still belong to one another, and that they must protect each other because their
lives belong to one another. Inuyasha also posesses the ability, or purhaps curse, to transform into a full-demon, sort
of. When his life is threatened, his demon blood takes over his mind and he becomes a ruthless killing machine.
The only thing that can supress it is Tetsusaiga, the sword which is too heavy for him to weild until he slays the evil dragon
whose name I can't possibly spell without looking it up.
When he goes all demon, only two things can stop him, being "sat", and also being knocked unconscious.
Both are used frequently. Although Inuyasha's personality makes a great number of advancements, especially after the
bandit-killing event, he is stubborn and hard-headed permanently, it seems. Up until his demon side awakens, Inuyasha
had never killed a human before. He must have done a lot of running around and terrorizing people but never actually
attacked humans. Of all those he protected by basically slaughtering the bandits, Kagome is the only one to go comfort
him afterwards. This is a pretty important moment because Inuyasha reveals some of what he feels for Kagome in a brief
monologue where he says "Next time, I could hurt you with these claws." or something to that effect.
If that's off from what you've seen on Cartoon Network, I apologize, because once again I'm still
working from a fansubbed version because college gives me no time to indulge in my favorite activities. Sigh.
Inuyasha's strength grows immensely as the series goes along and his personality becomes more stable and on occasion, he offers
to help people without being goaded by Kagome.
