Inuyasha woke
with a start, sitting upright in unfamiliar surroundings. He waited for his eyes to adjust to the dark, but when the night
became little clearer, and the smells seemed dulled and watered down, he ran his hand over his head and swore bitterly. His
ears were gone. . .he was human.
'What's going on here?' He thought frantically, scanning the room and jumping up from
the sleeping mat. "Where's Kagome?" He said, unable to think where she would be. When he'd fallen asleep, she'd been safely
under his tree, the young kitsune curled up on her chest. Wherever he was, he wasn't there to protect Kagome. "Inuyasha.
. .what are you doing?" A soft voice questioned from the mat where he'd been sleeping.
He whirled around eyes locking onto the raven-haired woman sitting there. The moonlight
streamed through the crack in the doorway, illuminating her hair and reflecting in her eyes. "Kikyo. . ." he whispered, racing
over to her. She
yawned sleepily and grabbed his hand, pulling him down next to her, "Come back to bed. . . I'm cold without you." "What's going
on here?" He demanded of her, his human hands tracing her face. "What are we doing here?"
Kikyo smiled at him, twisting one of his ebony locks around her finger. "We were sleeping.
. ." Her sleepy eyes widened in surprise, "Inuyasha!" She whispered excitedly, "Here! Feel!" She guided his hand to her stomach,
which he now saw was swollen with a child. "The baby's kicking!"
Several sharp jerks pressed against Inuyasha's palm and he stared at Kikyo in wonder.
"A baby. . ." "When
you used the jewel to become human, I never dreamed we would be this happy, Inuyasha. I never dreamed we could ever be this
happy. . ." she murmured, a tear, silvery in the moonlight rippled down her cheek.
"Kikyo," Inuyasha choked, feelings of confusion, fear, and wonder sweeping through him.
"How?" She
smiled, "Let's go back to sleep, Inuyasha. . ."
He nodded and lay down next to her, pulling her against his chest and slowly breathing
in her soft scent. Morning would come soon.
"Inuyasha!" Inuyasha clung to the tree branch in shock. "Come down here!" "Kagome?"
He questioned and leapt out of the tree, landing gracefully, his silver hair swirling around him. He scanned the area around
him, and sniffed the air for any indication of where Kikyo might have gone. "Where is she?"
"Huh?" Kagome muttered, stepping back as Inuyasha darted past her. "Who?" "Kikyo! Where
is she!" He demanded.
Kagome glared at him. "So you want to go to her?"
Inuyasha stared at her in confusion. "Kagome. . .where did she go?" Kagome ground
her teeth together furiously, "Inuyasha! Sit!"
For several moments, he lay on the ground, stunned and confused. When he was able to
move, he leapt up into the tree and bounded from branch to branch until he reached the top. What was that? He knew that the
"sit" command hadn't been a dream. No dream hurt that much. . . But Kikyo, he could still feel her skin against his hand,
still feel the kicking of the baby. Which was real? He reacked up, running his hand over his ears and shook his head. Real.
What was real anyway?
